The New Niagara Health System Health-Care Complex and Walker Family Cancer Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada

Welcome to the project website for Niagara Health System’s new health-care complex. The 375-bed acute care site will be located on a 32-acre section of a 40-acre site at First Street and Fourth Avenue in west St. Catharines.

We have partnered with the Niagara Health System (NHS) and Infrastructure Ontario (IO) to design, build, finance and maintain the new facility for approximately 34 years, ensuring it is built on time and on budget. Our construction partner commenced work on site in April of 2009.

Replacing the aging St. Catharines General and Ontario Street Sites in St. Catharines, the new facility will provide an additional 99 beds, serving residents of St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake and surrounding communities, with a full-range of acute/critical care, surgical, emergency, mental health and ambulatory services. This facility is being designed to respond to changes in future health-care delivery, thus ensuring that exemplary care is provided to our patients and families for generations to come.

The new, state-of-the-art health care complex will also accommodate new regional services that have not been available locally in Niagara, including comprehensive cancer care at the Walker Family Cancer Centre, along with facilities to support cardiac catheterization and longer-term mental health beds. The new site will also act as the hub of regional dialysis services, supported by the permanent dialysis unit recently constructed in Welland.

When the project is completed, Niagara will be home to one of the most up-to-date health-care facilities in the province, establishing infrastructure to care for and treat the health needs of the Niagara region.

We appreciate the importance of this project; the community has devoted vast amounts of voluntary time and fundraising efforts to help bring modern health-care infrastructure to Niagara. We are very proud to be charged with responsibility for its delivery and ultimately contributing to the health-care opportunities for the people of Niagara now and well into the future.

As committed members of the community, we are dedicated to supporting the development of exceptional health services.
