Universal Access
We have addressed universal accessibility by minimizing travel distances and avoiding complicated corridors. It will be a simple and intuitive facility to navigate and use.
Services that are most likely to be used by people with broader accessibility challenges are close to elevator lobbies and these in turn are located close to the main level drop-off, transit and parking areas.
Independent Patient Experience
The layout of the new NHS health-care complex supports patient independence by providing a layout that minimizes the distances that patients are required to travel, and by facilitating movement along all routes.
Factors that contribute to a safe and independent patient experience include access to daylight, generous space in main public corridors, with very few corners to navigate and centrally-located elevators.
Other Elements Promoting Universal Access
- At key points of interaction, such as reception desks and nurse care stations, multi-level counters will be installed at different height levels to accommodate all visitors
- All lounge and waiting areas will provide space to allow visitors in wheelchairs to sit with family and friends
- Flooring in the building corridors incorporates visual and textural contrast to assist the visually-impaired
- Accessibility has been addressed in the landscape design by using acceptable grades, space for maneuverability, surface materials, hand-rails and raised garden plots
- Entrance doors will be user-friendly and fully automated, with weather-controlled sliding entry systems
- Along the main corridor, bench seating will provide respite for visitors
- Assistive devices will be provided for lifting in patient rooms and proper railings and support systems will be available in treatment areas
- Hands-free plumbing fixtures will be provided throughout the hospital
Addressing Ergonomic Issues
- Most lighting will be indirect to lessen eye fatigue, creating an even, soft light without glare and harsh shadows
- Cabinets and doors will have accessible pulls, closers and handles to facilitate operational functions
- Workstations will be adjustable to suit individual requirements for comfort and customization towards task preferences
