About the Project
Preliminary photo renderings of the building, main entry, treatment rooms, patient care rooms, nursing stations, reception and family support areas are also available to view in our Image Gallery.
The centerpiece of the new NHS health-care complex will be a five-storey, 970,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility with 375 beds. It will be significantly larger than the present facilities at the St. Catharines General and Ontario Street Sites.
Healthcare is a competitive industry and there are shortages of doctors, nurses and other medical professionals across the country. This new world-class health-care complex will set the standard for healthcare throughout Ontario and across the country, becoming a coveted place to work and attracting the best and brightest to the Niagara Region.
The facility will include:
Replacement facility for the aging St. Catharines General and Ontario Street Sites
- Acute care facility with 375 beds
- Serving residents of St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake and surrounding communities, with a full-range of acute/critical care, surgical, emergency, mental health and ambulatory services
Brand new regional services
- The Walker Family Cancer Centre to provide close-to-home treatment for the more than 1,200 cancer patients who currently travel to Hamilton or Toronto for life-saving radiation treatment
- A Regional Longer-Term Mental Health Program with longer-term inpatient mental health beds, combined with acute inpatient mental health beds and ambulatory care services for Niagara residents
- A Regional Cardiac Catheterization Program to provide diagnostic investigation services, reducing hospitalizations for heart disease, lowering wait times and improving access to treatment
- An expanded dialysis services enabling the hospital to act as the hub of the Niagara Regional Renal Program, accompanied by a permanent dialysis unit in Welland
